Summary
The history of Gomphu Kora dates back to the eighth century when Guru Rinpoche was seated in Tibet preaching Buddhism and helping build up the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, Samey. According to the legend, at that time the non-human evil spirit named Mongkhapa fled from Samey and concealed inside the rock at present Gomphu Kora. Guru Rinpochhe meditated in a cave inside the rock where evil spirit was hiding and after three days the evil spirit was subdued. Following this incident, several eminent religious leaders of different times visited the place and set this place as historically and from religious stand point as one of land mark of Guru Rinpochhe.
Therefore, from the inception time until now, the practice of curcumbulation festival has been in a vibrant form. Thousand of devotees from all over the places, neighboring places and abroad pay a holy journey to Gomphu Kora in the spring. Geographically, Gomphu Kora is located in the eastern district of Trashigang. This year the festival will held from 31st March to 2nd April.
